Multifaceted and surprising Chemnitz
Discover Chemnitz – the modern and bustling city in the heart of Saxony. Home of 240,000 inhabitants, Chemnitz is the fourth largest city in East Germany and presents itself as rich colourful and multifaceted.

The charming ambiance of Chemnitz is brought about by the unique mixture of 850 years of city history, historic industrial architecture and significant reconstruction following German reunification. The outcome is a flourishing city which gains confidence from the achievements of its inhabitants.

Famous architects such as Helmut Jahn, Christoph Ingenhoven and Hans Kollhoff have designed new structures for the inner city during recent years. These form an exciting contrast to the existing cultural monuments.

The new and bustling centre boasts a variety of facilities which are inviting to shoppers and visitors alike. This diversified ensemble is complemented by the arts, culture and education centre DAStietz, the Red Tower (Roter Turm) as well as numerous restaurants, cafés and clubs for night owls of all kinds.

Explore Chemnitz on your own or take advantage of the regular guided walking or bus tours offered by the Tourist Information Centre.

In 2007 the Gunzenhauser Museum was opened, one of the largest private art collections containing works from the second half of the 20th century in Germany. This collection boasts around 2,500 works, including what is the most comprehensive collection of works by Otto Dix, a collection of over 200 of his life’s works.
