Built as a hunting lodge and pleasure palace of the Elector, Augustus the Strong, the Renaissance castle accommodates a number of interesting museums, such as the motorbike museum, the museum of hunting animals and ornithology or the horse carriage museum today. In addition to numerous special events it provides the perfect background for the annual meeting of motorbike, motor sports and vintage car enthusiasts from Germany and elsewhere, such as the motorbike winter meeting, the traditional vintage car meeting in autumn or the castle and fortress rally for vintage cars.

Rokoko park opens continously




The scenic Baroque-style castle on the Zschopau river is surrounded by a Rococo park with fountains and pavilions. From May till October it is a place for concerts and the annual park festival. Worthwhile seeing are the Chinese Room, Red Salon, castle library, winter garden and the mediaeval chapel.

This mediaeval ADVENTURE CASTLE has a lot to offer especially for kids including a visit to the Christmas and toy museums, manual weaving shop and the tin and minerals room. Experiencing and marvelling, playing and exploring, testing and buying – you can find all this at the Scharfenstein Castle.

The late-Gothic Kriebstein Castle is a gem sitting high above the Zschopau river. Special guided tours let you look behind closed doors, additionally the castle can be explored by candlelight, open fire and by torchlight. In the chapel, the treasure vault and the old banquet hall you can admire old wall paintings. The scenic environment of the castle also invites you for hiking tours and boat trips.

The Daetz Centre is the only centre worldwide of international wood sculpture. Stories, legends and myths of peoples from all parts of the world plunge the visitor into various cultures. Wood sculptors from 27 countries created 700 unique pieces and thus demonstrate the beauty, expressiveness and versatility of international wood sculpture. Detailed information on this exhibition and most of the exhibits will be given by a multi-lingual audio guide.

The cultural park Miniworld presents about 100 original and true-to detail buildings and technical facilities at a 1:25 scale ranging from the ancient world to the present. Unique i n the collection is a replica of the Seven Wonders of the World. The Light House of Alexandria, the Mausoleum of Halikarnassos, the Zeus Temple and the Colossus of Rhodes are ready and waiting to be admired.

The late-Gothic aisled church built between 1499 and 1525 is the distant visible landmark of Annaberg-Buchholz. The interior design of the church is very impressive. A particular delight is to listen to the renovated Walcker organ from 1884 which has more than 4,000 pipes and 65 stops.

How the wealth of Annaberg-Buchholz was created in the past can be marvelled at the Frohnauer Hammer-Mill. Giant hammers driven by a water wheel are the most well-known witnesses of the local mining industry. A tour of the museum will take you to the 300 years old iron forgery and the manor-house with the historical living rooms of the foreman from the 19th century.

This traditional place of Saxon hard coal mining is one of the largest German museums of its kind. A combination of historical data presented in a showcase manner and an area showcasing impressive machinery in action is worth seeing.

A helmet and lamp, overalls and rubber boots – that will be the outfit you will need to travel down 100 metres deep into the pit. You will learn about the different eras of mining, admire compressed-air operated tools in action and try out for yourself a hammer and a chisel.

This cathedral is the most important mediaeval religious building, and also landmark of the university and Silbermann town of Freiberg. Built after a fire destroyed the previous cruciform Romanesque pier basilica the late-Gothic church has been dominating the historical Untermarkt since the 16th century.

This museum gives a good survey on the region of toymakers and Christmas folk craft. Different houses and workshops demonstrate daily life from the 19th and 20th centuries.

This segregation shop is currently the only maintained monument of the non-ferrous metallurgy in Europe and has been in existence since 1537. Once built as a self-contained industrial village 22 historical buildings still exist with the copper forgery as one of them. A fully functional forgery is shown to visitors. In the melting shop open-air museum, the core proper of the ensemble, the segregation technology with the different hearths, kilns and water wheels are demonstrated.

As early as 1846 the first theatre performance is said to have taken place in this very scenic environment. Since 1952 this open-air theatre has been used regularly by the Annaberg Eduard-von-Winterstein Theatre. It has a capacity of 1,200 seats and 500 lawn places.
